Celebrity Actress Claims to Have Popularized Yoga

Yoga is one of the most ancient practices in the world. It’s been practiced in the East for over 5,000-10,000 years. While it hasn’t been popular in the US for quite that long, it has been around here since the 1960s.

That fact hasn’t stopped actress Gwyneth Paltrow from claiming she popularized the practice though. In an upcoming interview in WSJ Magazine, Paltrow was quoted saying, “ I remember when I started doing yoga and people were like, ‘What is yoga? She’s a witch. She’s a freak.”

Paltrow then elaborated by claiming to popularize the activity. “Forgive me if this comes out wrong,” Paltrow continues, “but I went to do a yoga class in L.A. recently and the 22-year-old girl behind the counter was like, ‘Have you ever done yoga before?’ And literally I turned to my friend, and I was like, ‘You have this job because I’ve done yoga before.'”

While Gwyneth Paltrow is one of Hollywood’s A-listers, and her influence in the wellness world through her lifestyle brand Goop is vast (albeit heavily disputed), she’s giving herself far too much credit.

Goop in the past has made heavily disputed claims. Some of the recommended products and tips range from ridiculous to downright dangerous. Paltrow and the company recently settled a $145,000 lawsuit over claims about vaginal jade eggs.

Whether or not Paltrow can be credited for yoga’s popularity (she can’t), all yogis can agree we’re happy once a new person discovers the joy and tranquility this practice can bring to one’s life.
