Q&A: Can I Eat Before Yoga Class?

Food is fuel for our body. It’s what gives us the energy to get through the day. Most people know this, which has them wondering whether or not they should eat and refuel before hitting a yoga class.

The answer to whether you can or should eat before yoga is both yes and no.

Eating before a class will mean you have the energy and strength to get through it. However, it’s important not to eat right before a class. This can make you feel full and bloated, which may make flowing into positions hard. Ideally, you should eat no sooner than 2-3 hours before a yoga class. If you really need some energy before hitting the mat, consider a light snack 30 minutes beforehand. For a quick boost of energy, drink some fruit juice right before class.

It’s important to eat the right thing before a yoga class as well. Fatty and greasy foods will leave you feeling sick and weak. Yogis recommend eating healthy, light food before a class. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, yogurt and more are good options. These contain healthy fats and natural sugars that will make you feel full and provide you with the energy necessary for exercise.

Having a snack after yoga can also help with maintaining energy levels. Smoothies, avocado toast, and other light meals are great. They’ll fill you up without undoing all the good work you achieved during class. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water before, during, and after yoga to keep your body hydrated!

So can you eat before yoga class? Yes, you can eat a light meal 2-3 hours before class or a light healthy snack 30 minutes- 1 hour before. Make sure to drink plenty of water, and plan a healthy meal about an hour after class as well!
