June 21st is International Yoga Day or International Day of Yoga! It’s been celebrated annually since its conception in 2015. For yogis though, every day feels like Yoga Day.
The day it’s celebrated on was specifically selected as it’s the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the globe. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, originally proposed the idea in 2014.
He stated to the UN General Assembly,
“Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in well being. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day.”
Yoga is more than a form of exercise. It’s a practice that can have profound effects on one’s mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well being. We hope everyone can take a few moments today to do a yoga class, meditate, or just check in with yourself.
Feel free to sign up for one of our class and celebrate International Yoga Day with us!
